John Locke’s An Essay About Human Understanding (1689) is an inquiry into the supply and limits of human understanding, and is an evaluation of the nature of perception, opinion, and faith. Locke points out how expertise is received from sensation and reflection, how knowledge is distinguished from perception or opinion, and how certainty of awareness is attained by intuition, purpose, and feeling. Locke commences by presenting a selection of arguments versus the existence of innate ideas.
